Golden Gate Community School Principal Douglas Corbin has been awarded the Lighthouse Award for Turnaround Site Leader by the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE). The Lighthouse Awards are presented annually at the SDCOE Equity Conference to honor the work of education, community, and student leaders who are champions for equity.
“Congratulations to Principal Douglas Corbin for being a true equity-focused administrator who leads by example,” Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey said. “I am not surprised Mr. Corbin received this honor because I have seen firsthand his devotion to his students’ successes and how he fosters equity practices and growth with his staff.”
Corbin is a proponent of educators being culturally relevant as they connect and build relationships with students. Nominated by a colleague for his dedication and passion for ensuring every student has access and opportunity to succeed in school and in life, Corbin received the award at the 2023 Equity Conference on January 20, 2023, in San Diego, Calif.
“I am honored to be recognized for my efforts to create and support equitable educational opportunities for ‘at-promise youth,’” Corbin said. “Golden Gate Community School is doing amazing work at creating brighter futures for those most in need.”
According to SDCOE, the Turnaround Site Leader award is given to a school administrator who fosters and leads equitable outcomes for all learners and has been a beacon of light for an entire community.
Golden Gate Community School programs provide successful learning experiences for students in an alternative education environment. Students are supported in reaching their academic and career goals by teaching strategies and techniques which enable them to succeed personally, socially, and educationally in society.
