Are you looking for a meaningful way to serve your community? Residents of Grover Beach have an opportunity to serve their community as part of the City Council. Interested residents who live in District 4 are encouraged to submit an application on the City’s website by December 30.
Karen Bright was elected as the Mayor of Grover Beach, so her previous seat on the City Council is now vacant. In accordance with the City Council’s previous direction to seek a candidate for any vacancy from the district of that vacancy, the Council will review applications and conduct interviews with those residents who apply from District 4.
“I encourage any interested residents from District 4 to apply for the Council seat and step into this role during this exciting time for our City,” said Grover Beach Mayor Karen Bright. “We look forward to working with another resident who has a passion for public service. We will be identifying our Council Goals in the next few weeks, giving the new Council member an opportunity to have an immediate impact in Grover Beach.”
At the December 12 meeting, the Grover Beach City Council decided to fill this vacancy by appointment instead of a special election, which would have required additional time and funding. All eligible Grover Beach residents are invited to apply for the remaining term of this Council seat that expires December 2024. To be a candidate, you must be a resident of District 4 and be a registered voter in Grover Beach. Residents can see if they live in District 4 using the online interactive map.
The City Council will review all applications received by 5 p.m. on December 30 and will interview applicants during their meeting on January 9. Following the candidate interviews, the Council will make an appointment for the position. Once the appointment process is complete and the appointee takes the oath of office, the new Council Member will go through an orientation process with the City Manager, City Attorney and City Clerk and is encouraged to attend the League of California Cities New Mayors and Council Members Academy. Council Members are expected to attend two regular Council meetings per month on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, with special meetings or workshops as needed. Additionally, they must serve on regional boards, commissions and subcommittees that typically meet once a month.
Council members have an important role in developing City policies, adopting ordinances and resolutions, making land use decisions and approving agreements and contracts. Grover Beach Council Members receive a stipend of $720 per month for their service and are eligible for health benefits.
