To ensure that downtown San Luis Obispo is safe and easy for everyone to access, regardless of their preferred mode of transportation, the City is currently updating its Access and Parking Management Plan. The City is looking at how people access businesses, homes, cultural spaces, other points of interest around downtown San Luis Obispo, and in residential neighborhoods. City staff are working with the community to explore ways to make SLO’s parking more efficient and more connected with the four Major City Goals, including its economic resiliency, climate action and sustainable transportation goals.
The Access and Parking Management Plan serves as a guiding document for the City and community partners in developing parking services in San Luis Obispo. The plan went through a minor update in 2011 to include policies for downtown residents but much of the document has remained unchanged since the last update in 2002. However, since then, there have been significant changes in parking habits, technologies, preferences, policies, and related City plans for the community that make the current Access and Parking Management Plan outdated.
To update the City’s Access and Parking Management Plan, staff is working with a consultant to also look at innovate ways of managing curb space for deliveries, bikeshare, scooters, and gathering spaces such as parklets. Community input ensures that the City uses a balanced approach to competing demands for curbside spaces, incorporation of new parking designs, and address future mobility options.
