On May 31, Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24) issued the following statement ahead of the U.S. House of Representative’s consideration of the bipartisan budget agreement struck this weekend by President Biden and House Republican leaders that adjusts the U.S. debt limit to avoid a catastrophic default:
“The bipartisan budget agreement brokered by President Biden ensures the United States can pay its bills and avert a default while denying hostage demands for extreme cuts to programs that millions of Americans rely on.
“The bill that is before the House today is not perfect, but I recognize that compromise is the bedrock of governing in divided government. And while it includes some provisions that I disagree with, this deal rejects far-right demands to cut lifelines, prevents cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans’ benefits, and protects the historic investments we have made in climate action, infrastructure, and health care.
“I will vote today to advance this agreement and urge my colleagues to do the same. The alternative is a self-induced economic calamity that would devastate Central Coast families through a job-killing recession, massive losses in retirement accounts, higher costs, and a crippling of the American economy unlike any we have seen in generations.”
