City of San Luis Obispo issued the following announcement on Jan. 14.
The City of San Luis Obispo and CAPSLO recently partnered to relaunch the Railroad Square Safe Parking Pilot Program with new amenities and safety improvements.
The expanded program at Railroad Square is designed to connect parkers to the 40 Prado Homeless Services Center and, hopefully, find them permanent housing. Case management is not required to participate in services. The program includes:
- 20 parking spaces for safe parking. Check-in is from 6 to 7 p.m. Parkers must leave by 7am. This program runs 7 nights a week.
- On-site port-a-potty and handwashing station
- Access to all day services at 40 Prado Homeless Services Center (showers, meals, laundry, medical care)
The program supports the major city goal of collaborating with local nonprofit partners to reduce chronic homelessness. The 40 Prado Homeless Services Center is a 365-day-per-year facility that helps individuals and families improve their health and stability, moving them towards self-sufficiency.
This safe parking pilot program was established as part of the local emergency proclamation related to COVID-19 and supports services for community members who are experiencing homelessness during these unprecedented times. CAPSLO is now operating the Railroad Square Safe Parking Program for about $65,000 annually.
