CITY OF GROVER BEACH: Grover Beach to Host Virtual Memorial Ceremony and Flyover on September 11

911

City of Grover Beach issued the following announcement on Sept. 3.

Marking the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the City of Grover Beach will host ceremonies on Saturday, September 11 to honor and remember all those impacted by the tragedy that took place in 2001. This meaningful tribute will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will ultimately be a capstone to the City’s annual ceremonies which have taken place over the last 20 years.

The day’s events will include a special memorial flag ceremony led by Grover Beach Mayor Jeff Lee and local boy scouts. A virtual tour of memorabilia will also be presented as part of the program to share documentation from that horrific day in American history. Those interested in taking part in this remembrance tribute and paying their respects can join live via the City’s Facebook Page starting at 9:00 a.m. This ceremony is expected to last approximately one hour.

The flag ceremony will be followed by a flyover by the Paso Robles Estrella Warbirds at 10:15 a.m., which many Grover Beach residents should be able to see from their own homes. Their flight path will carry them over Ramona Garden Park. For more details on their planned flight path, please visit the Estrella Warbird Museum website.

“Our City has paused to reflect on 9/11 each year since that terrible day,” said Mayor Lee. “We will never forget the lives lost, the families forever changed and the sacrifice of first responders and military personnel. Patriot Day is a chance for us to come together and remember what unites us as Americans.”

In 2002, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution to designate September 11 as Patriot Day, calling for a national day of mourning and remembrance. Grover Beach will continue to pay respects on Patriot Day each year in various forms and invites residents to do the same.
