SANTA MONICA POLICE DEPARTMENT: Message from Interim Chief Seabrooks

Announcement2

Santa Monica Police Department issued the following announcement on Aug. 30.

Message from Interim Chief Seabrooks

Today, Sunday, August 29, 2021, a planned event is scheduled to occur in the area of the Santa Monica Pier.  This event is a public assembly for those who wish to exercise their right express their opinions regarding medical freedom associated with the COVID-19 vaccinations and vaccination passports.  There is also credible intelligence indicating counter protestors will be in attendance.  Based on recent events in surrounding cities, clashes between demonstrators and counter protestors have erupted in violence.  In an abundance of caution, the Police Department will have enhanced staffing through City and particularly in the Downtown area.

The Santa Monica Police Department is committed to the protection and safety of everyone who visits our City, regardless of the reason.  We want everyone to feel safe and to be safe and protected from unnecessary and unwarranted harm or danger.  In support of the Police Department’s safety posture, the Santa Monica City Council passed an emergency ordinance prohibiting the possession of various items during public assemblies and community events during its August 24th meeting.  And this is where we seek your assistance.  We need you to be an extra set of eyes for us.  If you see anything unusual or out of the norm, please let us know.  For our business communities whose members are uncertain about boarding up their businesses, we understand.  Do know the most recent incidents of violence associated with these types of protests has largely involved protestors and counter protestors who primarily focused on each other.  Where there have been bouts of vandalism, such as graffiti or the burning of trash cans, there have not been any reported acts of looting.   Nevertheless, if you wish to board up your business’ windows or have materials on hand, just in case, and you want to remove or secure any street furniture, I support those actions.  And to our residents, do know I support those actions that you might undertake to give yourself piece of mind as we navigate the day’s activities.

If you have not already, we urge you to register for the City’s SMAlert system. It is the fastest way for you to receive critical and timely information in the event of emergencies, for traffic detours, and other urgent updates that may impact your operations. To register visit www.santamonica.gov/alerts.

For your reference, please report non-life-threatening incidents to Public Safety Communications/Dispatch:  (310)458-8491 and for life threatening emergencies, call 9-1-1.
