CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO: SLO’s Urban Forest Program Assesses City’s 20,000+ Trees

Trees

City of San Luis Obispo issued the following announcement on Feb. 4.

The City of San Luis Obispo is partnering with West Coast Arborists to embark on a six-week project to catalog the more than 20,000 trees that make up the City’s urban forest.

This information gathered during the inventory project will help the City maintain San Luis Obispo’s urban forest and will be incorporated into the City’s Urban Forest Strategic Plan.

Starting early February 2022, certified arborists from West Coast Arborists will walk around the City, in public rights of way, parks and along City facilities to collect information that includes a tree’s location, species, size, condition, as well as future maintenance needs. The arborist will wear a brightly colored safety vest with a West Coast Arborists logo and, if community members have questions, will have pamphlets on hand that explain the purpose of the tree inventory.

The City’s urban forest contains dynamic ecosystems that provide critical benefits to people and wildlife. The City’s urban forest helps offset greenhouse gas emissions, and keeping the City’s urban forest healthy, vibrant, and growing is a key part of the City’s climate action goals. Trees adds beauty, form and structure to the City’s urban design while also reducing noise and providing places to recreate, find shade, spur community revitalization, and add economic value to San Luis Obispo.

The City Public Works Department’s Urban Forest Services Program is responsible for the maintenance of these trees.
