CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO: City to Study Paved Road Conditions First Week of January

Megaphone gd7b38fb34 1280

City of San Luis Obispo issued the following announcement on Dec. 10.

The City of San Luis Obispo will soon study its streets to determine which ones are in good or bad condition.

Infrastructure Management Services (IMS), an Arizona-based firm, will complete a detailed condition assessment of all City maintained streets in early January 2022 to help the City develop a long-term infrastructure maintenance plan and budget.

“The City’s roadway system is the backbone for all other community services. The roadways need to be assessed and maintained regularly,” said Matt Horn, the City’s Public Works Director. “This information is needed so that the City can continue to be responsible stewards of our public roads and ensures that we’re spending money wisely to maintain them.”

The City’s pavement maintenance program strives to keep city streets smooth, safe, and clean, which keeps traffic flowing efficiently. While the City encourages community members to report a problem with City streets, the Public Works Department also strives to proactively study public roadways to properly plan and budget for pavement maintenance and repair projects.

Three IMS field technicians will drive around San Luis Obispo in white Ford Transit vehicle equipped with a laser road surface tester, or RST. This device has two roof-mounted laser scanners on the rear end of the vehicle pointing straight down and measuring pavement roughness, rutting, cracking, and other surface distresses as it travels down the roadway. It will also be used to collect digital video and Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) information.

The City Public Works Department will use the data to recommend locations for overall improvements, including reconstruction, resurfacing, and resealing.
