City of Clovis issued the following announcement on Dec. 8.
The City of Clovis and Habitat for Humanity Greater Fresno Area (Habitat) surprised a local military veteran family Wednesday afternoon with word that they have been selected to purchase a new Habitat home.
The veteran family selected is the Delgado family. Roman Delgado, a Veteran of the Navy, and his wife Myra have four children ranging from 5 to 17 years of age. Currently, the family is living in a small 2-bedroom apartment, and is paying $1,050.00 in rent, nearly the same amount the family will pay for their new mortgage payment. The Delgado’s new home is a 3-bedroom, 2-bath with 1,258 square feet of living space, twice the size they currently live in.
Mayor Jose Flores, joined by members of the Clovis City Council, welcomed the family to the neighborhood and shared stories about how he was raised in a home which once stood on the property.
The home, located at 1403 4th Street, is the fourth home Habitat has built in the neighborhood in partnership with the City of Clovis, and the second home built exclusively for a veteran family, with the first one being located just next door.
To be eligible for the Affordable Homeownership Program through Habitat for Humanity, families must undergo a thorough needs evaluation, demonstrate a need, qualify for an affordable home loan, and put in at least 500 hours of sweat equity.
In addition to donating the land for the two homes for veterans to Habitat, the City of Clovis is providing $86,000 in down payment assistance to keep monthly cost as low as possible.
