West Paso Robles has been officially approved as a Firewise USA community, becoming the first neighborhood in the City of Paso Robles to receive this designation, according to a Mar. 17 announcement from Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services.
The recognition highlights efforts by residents and local agencies to reduce wildfire risk through mitigation activities, community engagement, and home hardening practices. The designated area includes all city properties west of Vine Street, from 1st Street to 24th Street.
Firewise USA is a national program run by the National Fire Protection Association that acknowledges communities working proactively on wildfire preparedness. Participation in the program helps neighborhoods organize around fire safety and strengthens partnerships between residents and fire agencies.
In California, state regulations known as “Safer from Wildfires” require insurance companies to recognize Firewise USA communities. This can lead to potential insurance discounts for property owners within those areas. The National Fire Protection Association processes applications for the program and provides updated boundary data to insurance industry providers twice each year, in March and October.
Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services thanked the Paso Robles Community Emergency Response Team for assisting with the application process. Special recognition was given to Firewise Board members Dan Jones, Steve Eorio, Jill Corgill, Rick Goree, John Hamon, and Gina Grieb for their leadership in advancing the initiative.
Officials said that while more work remains ahead, this milestone marks significant progress toward improving wildfire preparedness in Paso Robles’ west side wildland-urban interface area. The department plans to expand participation in the Firewise program to additional neighborhoods.
