CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO: Low-Income Housing Wait List Opens This Week

Housing11

City of San Luis Obispo issued the following announcement on Feb. 6.

The Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo (HASLO) will accept applications on Feb. 8 through Feb. 10, 2022 for a limited number of units in a new apartment complex for low-income community members.

The units are part of the nation’s Project-Based Voucher (PBV) program and HASLO will only accept online applications via www.haslo.org from Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 9 a.m. through Thursday, Feb. 10 at 4 p.m.

If you need a reasonable accommodation to apply for the wait list, please call (805) 543-4478. If you lack computer access, please visit a local library or can call America's Job Center at 805-286-8530 to schedule a time to use their computers at 3450 Broad St., #103 in SLO.

This application is a two-step process. Eligible applications will be placed on the wait list in date/time order, with preferences for SLO County residents and veterans, and are generally restricted to households who earn less than 30% of Area Median Income (AMI). Applicants must meet occupancy standards. Generally, this means there are two household members per bedroom unless there are generational or gender differences. If eligible for the PBV program, the applicant will then be referred to the landlord, who will have additional screening requirements.

One-, two-, and three-bedroom units are available as part of this program at Courtyard at the Meadows apartments, at 3175 Violet. HASLO is the property management agent for the owner, Willow Walk Senior Apartments.

While the City of San Luis Obispo does not provide or manage public housing for the community, HASLO was founded as a public entity under California law in 1968 to serve as the Public Housing Agency (PHA) for SLO County. As a result, HASLO helps the city’s lower-income residents secure and maintain long-term housing.

What is the Project-Based Voucher Program?

The Project-Based Voucher (PBV) program is a special-purpose voucher program of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The program attaches rental assistance to a particular unit rather than to a family. The resident of the unit benefits from a monthly subsidy that is paid directly to the landlord. The resident will only pay a portion of their actual income toward rent and the subsidy pays the balance.

Applications will not be provided or accepted in person or by fax, mail, or email. An email address is required for the online application.

HASLO provides decent, safe and affordable housing for eligible residents and manages the Section 8 program in the City of San Luis Obispo. HASLO programs have grown to incorporate a variety of assistance and support options to help the families and individuals of modest means to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life.

HASLO offers several housing options including fixed-rent affordable apartments and subsidized affordable apartments. Fixed rent affordable apartments are either owned by HASLO, or managed by HASLO and owned by one of our affiliate private non-profit organizations of partnerships. Subsidized apartments or housing means that you benefit from a monthly subsidy that helps you pay rent typically by paying the subsidy directly to the landlord.
