CALIFORNIA POLYTECHNIC STATE UNIVERSUTY: Ellis Repeats as Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of Week

Basketball

California Polytechnic State University Athletics issued the following announcement on Dec. 28

After tallying the nation's third-highest-scoring game this season, Mustang guard Abbey Ellis was announced as the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week as well as Big West Conference Player of the Week, each for the second time in a row. Ellis scored 39 points on Dec. 21 as Cal Poly (4-2) capped non-conference play with a 73-63 road victory over San Diego State.

The sophomore from Australia made 13 of 25 floor shots in Viejas Arena (including 8-for-11 from 3-point distance) and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line for the program's highest-scoring display in almost two full calendar years (just one point back of a 40-point effort by current Spain/LF2 pro Dynn Leaupepe).

Also on Monday, College Sports Madness selected Ellis as its National Mid-Major Player of the Week. Ellis' eight 3s against the Aztecs are also tied for the third-most in a game throughout the country this season, three back of the 11 hit by Fairfield's Sam Lewis for the national lead. The NCAA scoring peak for 2020-21 so far is 44, by Charli Collier of Texas.

With a free-throw percentage of .931, Ellis ranks No. 30 in the country, while her scoring average of 20.3 points per game ranks 35th nationally and her 3.2 steals are 31st across the NCAA.

Cal Poly is scheduled to open Big West action visiting a newcomer to the conference, UC San Diego, on Friday and Saturday. Tipoff in RIMAC Arena in La Jolla is set for 3 p.m. on both New Year's Day and Jan. 2, with each game against the Tritons able to be followed online via ESPN3 and Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer through GoPoly.com.
