Rep. Salud Carbajal, who represents California’s 24th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on social media addressing the recent government shutdown and criticizing Republican lawmakers for their actions.
On September 30, 2025, Carbajal wrote, “.@HouseDemocrats are in Washington and ready to work. Republicans skipped town because they’d rather shut the government down then protect your health care.”
Later that day, he responded to comments from the Trump administration by stating, “This is complete and utter partisan propaganda coming from the Trump admin. Newsflash: our ‘wish list’ is actually just the bare minimum to protect health care, food assistance, and housing for the American people.”
The following day, October 1, 2025, Carbajal addressed constituents directly regarding the implications of the shutdown: “Republicans have driven our country into a government shutdown because of their failure to govern. Central Coast, I know many of you are wondering what this means for you, your families, and our community. Head to: https://t.co/Hb8EKm7nkB for more info.”
Salud Carbajal has served in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Lois Capps. Prior to his tenure in Washington D.C., he was a member of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors from 2005 to 2017. Born in Moroleón, Guanajuato in 1964 and currently residing in Santa Barbara at age 58, Carbajal graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a BA in 1990.
