Rafael Bobo-Lloret was named Big West Freshman of the Year for the Cal Poly men’s golf program on May 12, and joined sophomore Nolan Kuszyk as an All-Big West second team selection.
The recognition highlights a strong season for both athletes. Bobo-Lloret, from Marseille, France, is the first Mustang to receive the conference’s freshman honor since Justin De Los Santos in 2014. He led Cal Poly with a scoring average of 72.5 strokes per round and earned February’s Big West Golfer of the Month after sharing first place at CSUN’s Bill Cullum Invitational.
Bobo-Lloret finished tenth at the May 3-5 Big West Championship and seventeenth at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate held Feb. 23-25. Over his season, he achieved three top-20 finishes, nine rounds under par, and three rounds in the 60s.
Nolan Kuszyk, from La Cañada Flintridge, California, was also recognized on the All-Big West second team for a second consecutive year. Kuszyk played all 33 competitive rounds this season with a scoring average of 72.6 and led Cal Poly with three top-10 finishes. His best performance came with a fifth-place finish at Central Michigan’s Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational (March 23-24) and sixth place at CSUN’s Bill Cullum Invitational (Feb. 2-3). He posted eleven rounds under par and four in the 60s.
With both players contributing to its lineup, Cal Poly finished second at this year’s Big West Championship—the program’s highest result in ten years and its best showing under sixth-year head coach Phil Rowe.
