Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services (PRFES) is working with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to highlight the risks of lithium-ion batteries during Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 5 to 11. The campaign theme, “Charge into Fire Safety,” addresses how these rechargeable batteries, commonly found in items such as phones, laptops, power tools, e-cigarettes, and toys, can present fire hazards if not used correctly.
The safety message this year encourages residents to buy certified products, use approved chargers on hard surfaces rather than soft furnishings like beds or couches, and avoid leaving devices plugged in after charging is complete. PRFES also reminds people not to dispose of lithium-ion batteries in regular trash or curbside recycling bins. Instead, community members are advised to follow local disposal guidelines provided by the San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority (IWMA). Information about proper battery disposal can be found at www.iwma.com or by calling (805) 782-8530.
“Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere, and while convenient, they must be handled appropriately,” said PRFES Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal Paul Patti. “This campaign helps keep our community informed and safe.”
