The City of Paso Robles announced on May 28 the start of pedestrian improvements along Riverside Avenue from 17th to 24th Street. The project will upgrade all existing curb ramps and construct missing sidewalks in the corridor.
Riverside Avenue is part of a City Council-approved list of priority streets to be repaired and resurfaced using supplemental sales tax revenue, reflecting its importance in Paso Robles’ transportation network. With an average Pavement Condition Index of 62, the roadway is classified as being in fair condition. The avenue serves as a key pedestrian route, especially during the annual California Mid-State Fair, providing primary access for residents and visitors walking to and from the fairgrounds.
According to city officials, upgrading curb ramps and improving overall roadway conditions are expected to enhance pedestrian safety, accessibility, and user experience during large community events, while supporting year-round mobility for all users. The project is primarily funded by approximately $330,200 from a Community Development Block Grant program, with remaining costs covered by voter-approved supplemental sales tax revenue under Measures J-20/I-24.
Construction will take place in phases to minimize disruption during the Mid-State Fair. Curb ramp and sidewalk improvements are scheduled for completion before the fair begins to ensure safe pedestrian travel. Roadway grind-and-overlay work will be scheduled after the event concludes to avoid conflicts with increased traffic volumes related to fair activities.
Cen-Cal Construction is set to begin work during the week of June 1, pausing on July 10 for cleanup ahead of the Mid-State Fair. Work will resume on August 3. Residents with questions or concerns about the project may contact the City’s Public Works Department at (805) 237-3861.
