The facility is classified as a for-profit nursing home.
For that quarter, the nursing home was assigned an overall CMS rating of five, surpassing California’s statewide average of 3.2. The CMS rating considers health inspections, staffing levels, and the quality of resident care.
The data shows that Coastal Oaks Special Care Center had an average daily census of two residents out of 65 available beds in the first quarter of 2026, and the facility does not operate in connection with a hospital.
CMS reported no fines or penalties for Coastal Oaks Special Care Center during that time.
Altogether, San Luis Obispo County had 7 for-profit nursing home facilities.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the population of older adults in the nation keeps rising, as the number of younger Americans declines. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and above grew by 13%, while children under 18 saw a 1.7% decrease. The trend over the past century shows the older adult population swelling from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024. The country’s elderly population has increased dramatically in that time.
A 2021 study finds that close to half of this age group, or about 28 million people, are likely to need long-term services and support; more than a third are projected to require nursing home care eventually.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
