Jovan Lubbe was named Big West Freshman of the Year on Apr. 30, becoming the sixth Cal Poly Mustang in conference history to earn this recognition and the first since 2021. Lubbe, a freshman from Hazyview, South Africa, also secured spots on the All-Big West First Team for singles and Second Team for doubles.
The announcement highlights a strong season for Cal Poly Mustangs men’s tennis, with six team members receiving All-Big West honors. The awards reflect both individual accomplishments and team depth over the course of the season.
Lubbe led his team in wins at No. 1 singles with a record of 12-7 and went 5-2 against conference opponents. His performance included an upset victory over then-89th-ranked Lucca Liu from UC Santa Barbara that contributed to Cal Poly securing the regular-season title. “True freshman import from Hazyview, South Africa, Jovan Lubbe stunned the Big West this season and became the sixth Mustang in conference history, and first since 2021, to earn Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Year,” according to Cal Poly Mustangs Men’s Tennis.
Senior Aaron Eliscu was named to the All-Big West Second Team for singles after posting a team-leading record of 14-6 despite limited prior experience in singles matches. Eliscu stepped into higher lineup positions due to injuries among teammates and finished his regular season with notable wins over top-ranked players from UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego.
Graduate transfer Luc Hoeijmans earned Second Team recognition for singles after compiling a 10-5 record while playing primarily in top-half positions throughout his season at Cal Poly. In doubles play, Leo Matthysen paired with Lubbe on Second Team Doubles after joining during spring duals; Sean Ferguson and Raz Haviv received Honorable Mention Doubles honors following their late-season partnership that produced a four-match win streak.
Eliscu and Hoeijmans were honored during Senior Night as they prepare to graduate; all other recognized players are expected to return next year.
