Griffin Naess, a junior right-handed pitcher for Cal Poly, has been named Big West Pitcher of the Week for the second time in his college career.
Naess earned this recognition after an impressive performance during Cal Poly’s home opener against Washington State. He struck out 14 batters over seven innings, which is a new personal best for him. Previously, his highest number of strikeouts in a single game was seven. During the game, Naess struck out all three batters in the second, fifth, and sixth innings. He allowed only one hit and did not issue any walks. Following Naess’s outing, Brady Estes and Troy Cooper each pitched a scoreless inning to secure Cal Poly’s first shutout of the season.
Naess previously received this weekly honor as a freshman when he pitched eight shutout innings against Cal State Fullerton. In that game, he allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out seven batters.
So far this season, Naess holds a 1-1 record with a 1.50 ERA and has tallied 18 strikeouts over 14 innings pitched. His current strikeout total ranks second among pitchers in the Big West Conference.
