Cal Poly defeated San Jose State 11-4 on April 7, with Alejandro Garza recording his fourth four-hit game of the season and Sean McGrath earning his first collegiate victory at Baggett Stadium.

The win marks Cal Poly’s fifth consecutive victory over the Spartans and improves their overall record to 18-13. San Jose State dropped to 13-19 after losing for the seventh time in its last ten games.

Freshman right-hander McGrath pitched five scoreless innings, striking out six and allowing five hits without issuing a walk before turning the game over to four relievers. Josh Morano, Troy Cooper, Chris Downs, and Arlo Pendleton each contributed an inning of relief work. Cal Poly outhit San Jose State by a margin of 16-8.

Garza singled four times during the contest, scoring twice and driving in a run in the seventh inning. His recent performance has raised his batting average by fifty-nine points to .336 over three weeks. Dante Vachini, Ryan Tayman, Gavin Spiridonoff, and Jake Downing each collected two hits for Cal Poly. Tayman’s double drove in a run during a four-run first inning that also featured a two-run single from Antonio Castro and a sacrifice fly by Dylan Kordic. Spiridonoff hit his second home run of the year—a two-run shot—in the third frame.

San Jose State starter Tyler Albanese took the loss after allowing four runs in just one inning pitched. The Spartans used seven pitchers throughout the game under head coach Brad Sanfilippo.

This matchup was scheduled as the only meeting between Cal Poly and San Jose State this season after another planned game was canceled due to rain earlier in February. Looking ahead, Cal Poly will play its next two weekend series on the road against No. 7 Oregon State and Big West leader UC San Diego later this month.
