Junior Rory Devaney achieved First Team All-American status in the men’s hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone for Cal Poly’s track and field program. Devaney, a San Luis Obispo native, set a personal record with a throw of 243 feet, 4 inches (74.16 meters) during his second attempt at Hayward Field. This effort surpassed his previous best by nearly 13 feet and broke the school record by over 11 feet.
Devaney entered the final round in fifth place and maintained that position to secure a podium finish. His performance made him the first Cal Poly athlete since Jasmine Pickett in 2011 to earn First Team All-American honors in a field event and the highest male finisher in such an event since Aris Borjas placed third in javelin in 2007. He scored four points for Cal Poly, contributing to team points at the NCAA championships for the thirteenth time in program history.
Senior Travis Martin also competed in the men’s hammer throw, finishing tenth overall with a mark of 224 feet, 1 inch (68.31 meters). Martin missed qualifying for the final by just one inch but earned Second Team All-American honors.
Devaney and Martin are now among only three All-Americans from Cal Poly’s Division I men’s track and field program in the hammer throw, joining Tom Pagani, who won the national championship in 1961 when Cal Poly was competing at Division II level. This year marks the first time multiple Mustangs have earned All-American honors in one event during a season.
Redshirt junior Aidan McCarthy advanced to Friday’s men’s 800-meter final after winning his semifinal heat with a time of 1:47.25. McCarthy is seeking to become Cal Poly’s eleventh outdoor Division I national champion and its first since Sharon Day-Monroe won the women’s high jump title in 2005.
