Cal Poly wrestlers Koda Holeman and Trevor Tinker have been recognized as Division I Men’s Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). The announcement was made Wednesday, highlighting their achievements both academically and athletically during the season.
Holeman, a junior majoring in business administration, finished his redshirt sophomore wrestling season with a 20-13 record at 125 pounds. He earned an at-large bid to his first NCAA Championship but did not advance past his initial matches. Notably, he was the only member of the Cal Poly team to compete on every date this season, which earned him Ironman status.
Tinker, a fifth-year student studying Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration, received NWCA Scholar All-American honors for the second consecutive year. This season, he became only the second wrestler in Cal Poly history to win a Pac-12 Championship at heavyweight and the first since 1993. His championship qualified him for his third straight NCAA appearance, where he recorded a 2-2 result and completed the year with a 24-7 record. Tinker also achieved a 13-match winning streak during the season, with most of his victories coming by bonus points.
Both athletes were among 335 student-athletes from 75 Division I schools honored by the NWCA for their academic and athletic performance.
The NWCA bases its Scholar All-American recognition on specific criteria related to academic achievement and wrestling results. Nominees must meet one of several combinations of academic standing and competitive success, such as placing in the top eight at NCAAs with at least a 3.0 GPA or qualifying for nationals with higher GPA requirements.
