The Cal Poly women’s tennis team secured a 4-3 comeback victory against Cal State Fullerton on April 10, improving to a perfect 6-0 record in Big West play.
This win keeps the Mustangs at the top of the conference standings and demonstrates their resilience, as it was the third consecutive match in which they lost the doubles point but still managed to claim overall victory.
Cal State Fullerton took an early lead by winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, earning them the initial point. However, strong singles performances from Cal Poly shifted momentum. Junior Candela Aparisi earned her fourth straight singles win with a score of 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3, bringing her season record to 10-7. Senior Kennedy Buntrock added another point with a decisive win at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-4), tying her for ninth in program history for career dual singles victories with her forty-third.
Senior Sarah MacCallum contributed to the team’s success by overcoming an initial set loss at No. 6 singles and rallying back to take the next two sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-1), maintaining an undefeated record in Big West matches this year (6-0). After junior Natalie Lynch narrowly lost a three-set match at No.5 singles—allowing Fullerton to close within one—sophomore Jessica MacCallum clinched victory for Cal Poly by winning her own three-set contest at No.2 (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). Senior Alexandra Ozerets concluded play with a hard-fought loss in three sets at No.4.
With this result, Cal Poly advances its overall season record to eleven wins and seven losses while remaining tied for first place in conference standings alongside UC Santa Barbara.
The Mustangs will continue their regular season schedule on Sunday when they travel to face UC Irvine.
