Cal Poly’s softball team split a doubleheader against UC Davis on May 1, opening their final series of the season. The Mustangs secured a 12-4 win in five innings in the second game, after dropping the opener in an extended 11-inning contest by a score of 3-2.
The outcome highlights Cal Poly’s offensive surge in game two, where home runs from freshman Madi Bohannon, sophomore Maya Venegas, and senior Kiara Blanchard led to a decisive victory. The Mustangs posted their highest run total of the season and recorded hits from nearly every starter.
In the second game, Cal Poly built an early lead with a five-run second inning featuring key contributions from Blanchard and freshman Myleigh Cooper. Bohannon hit her first collegiate home run in the third inning. Despite UC Davis narrowing the gap with four runs in the fourth, Venegas responded with her own solo homer. Blanchard completed her career-high five-RBI performance with a three-run shot before Sienna Erskine ended the contest under run-rule conditions.
The opening matchup was Cal Poly’s longest since April 2019. UC Davis took an early lead but errors allowed Cal Poly to tie it up midway through. Sophomore reliever Bree Brennan kept Cal Poly competitive by stranding seven baserunners over several innings. Both teams traded late runs before Gia Felice drove home the winning run for UC Davis in the eleventh inning.
With postseason hopes already dashed prior to this series, Cal Poly will finish its season on May 2 against UC Davis.
