The Cal Poly softball team lost to UC San Diego, 6-0, in the final game of a three-game series on April 12. The game took place in La Jolla and was decided early by a two-run home run from UC San Diego’s Maalia Cherry during the bottom of the first inning.
The result matters as it concludes the series between Cal Poly and UC San Diego, with Cal Poly unable to secure a win in this matchup. The loss also sets the stage for Cal Poly’s remaining regular season games, most of which will be played at home.
After her first-inning homer, Cherry contributed further with an RBI double in the third inning that helped spark a four-run frame for the Tritons. Offensively, Cal Poly managed four hits but struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities. The Mustangs twice advanced runners to third base—once in the second inning and again in the sixth—but were unable to bring them home. Freshman Myleigh Cooper singled with two outs in the sixth to put runners at first and third before junior A’Niyla Byrd grounded out, ending one of their best chances.
In total, Cal Poly stranded five baserunners throughout Sunday’s contest. The team now looks ahead to its final three regular season series, including two at home beginning with Long Beach State on April 18 for a doubleheader and concluding with a solo matchup on April 19.
The outcome reflects ongoing challenges for Cal Poly as they aim to finish their season strong during upcoming home games.
