San Diego defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs softball team 6-1 at the Reggie Smith Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore catcher Maya Venegas drove in a run late in the game for Cal Poly, but San Diego’s five-run third inning proved decisive.
Cal Poly freshman pitcher Kaylee Davis held San Diego scoreless through the first inning. In the second, San Diego center fielder Kaylee Oh led off with a double and scored on a wild pitch to put her team ahead.
San Diego extended its lead in the third inning, scoring five runs. The key moment came when second baseman Mallory Axline hit a two-out triple that cleared the bases.
Cal Poly had an opportunity to score in the third after loading the bases with two outs against San Diego starting pitcher Charlie Johnson but did not capitalize. The Mustangs eventually got on the board in the sixth inning when Venegas singled home freshman pinch runner Karina Choi.
The Mustangs will conclude their participation at the Reggie Smith Invitational with a doubleheader against Kansas City and Washington scheduled for Sunday, March 1 at 9 a.m.
