Cal Poly junior third baseman Alejandro Garza has been selected as the Big West Preseason Player of the Year by D1baseball.com.

Garza, who has received First Team All-Big West honors in each of his first two seasons, led the conference in hits last season. He posted a .351 batting average with 16 doubles, six home runs, and 54 RBIs. Nationally, he ranked ninth in fewest strikeouts per at-bat and was 13th in total hits.

His performance contributed to Cal Poly’s Big West Championship win and their advancement to an NCAA Regional Final. During the 2025 season, Garza recorded 32 multi-hit games and maintained a hitting streak over 20 games.

With runners in scoring position, Garza hit .412 and earned the team’s Ozzie Smith MVP award. Over the summer, he played for the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod League and hit .298 against top collegiate pitching talent.

The Mustangs are set to begin their 2026 season on Friday, February 13 with a three-game series on the road against Campbell University in North Carolina.
