Cal Poly announced on May 4 that its baseball team will continue an eight-game road trip with a non-conference matchup against Santa Clara. The game is scheduled for Tuesday at Stephen Schott Stadium, with first pitch set for 4:05 p.m.
The Mustangs have won nine of their last twelve games and are currently eight games above .500, marking their best record this season. Cal Poly recently secured its seventh Big West series win in eight attempts by taking two out of three games against UC Irvine over the weekend.
Last week, Cal Poly defeated Santa Clara 7-0 at Baggett Stadium. In that game, four pitchers combined for a shutout and Nate Castellon recorded his ninth three-hit performance of the season, including a solo home run. Sean McGrath pitched five scoreless innings and matched his season high with six strikeouts. McGrath will start again on Tuesday against Santa Clara freshman Jackson Cook.
Cal Poly remains in first place in the Big West Conference with an overall record of 27-19 and a conference record of 17-7. The team leads UC Santa Barbara by one game and UC San Diego by three games in the standings. Sophomore shortstop Nate Castellon leads Cal Poly hitters with a .357 average, while Alejandro Garza follows closely at .346.
Santa Clara enters the contest after winning two out of three games at Gonzaga but holds an overall record of 18-28 and is ninth in the West Coast Conference standings. The Broncos lead the all-time series against Cal Poly, which began in 1956, by a margin of 53-46.
Head coach Larry Lee has led Cal Poly to significant achievements during his tenure, including guiding them to last year’s Big West tournament crown and their fourth NCAA postseason appearance.
