Cal Poly Mustangs men’s tennis team will play against UC San Diego in the opening round of the Big West Championship, according to an announcement on April 22. The match is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
The meeting comes nearly a year after Cal Poly was eliminated from the same tournament by UC San Diego. This time, Cal Poly enters as the No. 72-ranked team and holds the three-seed position, while UC San Diego is seeded sixth.
Cal Poly heads into this postseason matchup following a significant win over No. 35 UC Santa Barbara during Senior Night. That victory allowed them to share the Big West regular season title and ended several of UCSB’s winning streaks, including a nine-match overall run and a long-standing conference streak dating back to 2023. Aaron Eliscu was named Big West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after defeating Dominique Rolland and helping secure that win.
In their previous encounter on April 4 during conference play, Cal Poly defeated UC San Diego with a score of 4-1 at Ronca Tennis Center. Jovan Lubbe clinched that match for Cal Poly with a straight-sets victory at No. 1 singles.
If Cal Poly advances past UCSD again this week, they will face No. 2 seed UC Irvine in Friday’s semifinal round. The championship final is set for Saturday morning.
