The Cal Poly Mustangs softball team lost to UC Davis, 4-3, in their final game of the season on May 2. The Mustangs tied the score three times during Saturday’s matchup but were unable to match the Aggies’ run in the sixth inning.
The close contest saw left fielder Kiara Blanchard go 3-for-4 at bat in her last collegiate appearance. Freshman first baseman Myleigh Cooper delivered an RBI single in the first inning to even the score at one, and Blanchard hit a run-scoring double in the fourth to tie it again. In the fifth inning, third baseman Mylina Garza singled home Cooper for a third tie.
UC Davis took a late lead when pinch runner Vanessa Calvillo scored on a wild pitch in the sixth. The Mustangs threatened with back-to-back singles from Sienna Erskine and A’Niyla Byrd in their final at-bat but could not bring them home as freshman designated player Madi Bohannon struck out with two outs.
All four graduating players participated in Saturday’s finale. Blanchard concluded her career ranked tenth all-time for walks (62), eleventh for doubles (28), and thirteenth for runs batted in (71) at Cal Poly. Garza finished her tenure having started 176 of a possible 180 games and ranking third all-time with eight sacrifice flies.
Pitchers Ally Robbins and Amy Ross both set new personal bests this season for appearances, innings pitched, and strikeouts.
