The Cal Poly Mustangs lost to the Santa Clara Broncos, 11-4, in a baseball game played on May 5 at Stephen Schott Stadium. The Broncos improved their record to 19-28 with the win, while the Mustangs dropped to 27-20.
The outcome was notable as Cal Poly had previously shut out Santa Clara just a week earlier but struggled this time, allowing nine runs in the first four innings. The Mustangs have now lost 11 of their last 15 meetings against the Broncos and are currently holding a record of six wins and three losses in midweek games this season.
Coach Larry Lee’s team missed an early chance to take control by loading the bases with one out but failed to score after two strikeouts ended the inning. Over the course of the game, Cal Poly stranded a total of 14 runners on base.
Santa Clara scored three runs each in both the first and second innings and continued adding runs for a commanding lead. Sophomore shortstop Nate Castellon and graduate right fielder Dylan Kordic led Cal Poly’s offense with two hits each. For Santa Clara, designated hitter Mateo Garcia contributed two doubles and a single, while first baseman Will Anderson hit his first home run of the year—a three-run shot in the opening inning.
Brayden Dotoli earned his second win for Santa Clara after coming out of the bullpen early in relief. Sean McGrath took his fourth loss for Cal Poly after allowing six runs over just over an inning pitched.
With six conference games left, including an upcoming series at Cal State Fullerton followed by home games against Long Beach State from May 14-16 at Baggett Stadium, Cal Poly remains atop their conference as they approach season’s end.
