The Cal Poly Mustangs men’s tennis team defeated UC Riverside 4-1 on Apr. 9 at the SRC Tennis Courts in Riverside, maintaining an undefeated record in Big West conference play.
The victory keeps Cal Poly at the top of the conference standings with a perfect 4-0 record, marking their best start to conference action since the 2021-22 season. The team is tied in winning percentage with No. 32 UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine but leads in total wins.
Aaron Eliscu played a key role for the Mustangs, securing two overall wins, including clinching the match at No. 2 singles with a score of 6-2, 7-5. In doubles competition, Raz Haviv and Sean Ferguson won their match at No. 2 by a score of 6-1, while Eliscu paired with Sean Kamyshev for a win at No. 3 doubles (6-3).
Jovan Lubbe delivered a notable performance at No. 1 singles by achieving his first collegiate double shutout (6-0, 6-0), improving his season singles record to 12-6 with four consecutive victories. Ferguson also added to his successful season by moving to a personal record of 5-1 after defeating his opponent (6-1, 6-0).
With this win, Cal Poly has secured at least a top-three finish and earned a first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament. A victory over UC Irvine would guarantee them one of the top two seeds and additional byes through the tournament’s early rounds.
The Mustangs now hold an overall season record of 13-7—their highest win total since finishing with fifteen victories during their nationally ranked campaign in the year they finished No.63 nationally.
Cal Poly will continue its road trip against UC Irvine on Friday afternoon.
