Cal Poly’s men’s tennis team finished the first day of the George Lott Classic in Chicago with a split record, losing to DePaul 4-1 in the morning before securing a 4-2 win over Dartmouth in the afternoon.
The Mustangs began Saturday against tournament host DePaul at XS Tennis Village. Cal Poly secured the doubles point with pairs Hoeijmans/Lubbe and Haviv/Matthysen each winning 6-4. However, DePaul responded by sweeping all four singles matches in straight sets, leading to a 4-1 defeat for Cal Poly.
In their second match of the day, Cal Poly faced Dartmouth and claimed another doubles point. Jack Cross and Sean Kamyshev won in the No. 1 doubles slot, remaining unbeaten as a pair at 4-0 this season. Although Dartmouth tied up doubles play with a win over Haviv/Matthysen, Hoeijmans/Lubbe clinched their second doubles victory of the day with a close 7-5 result.
Singles play saw Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev earn wins for Cal Poly, evening up singles points at two apiece. The decisive match came from Luc Hoeijmans, who was playing at No. 1 singles for only the second time this year. He defeated Dartmouth’s Henry Ren in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-4), marking his third win of the day and securing Cal Poly’s team victory.
“Jack Cross and Sean Kamyshev made a statement in the No. 1 doubles slot, taking down the Big Green (6-1) to remain unbeaten as a pair at a perfect 4-0.”
“Dartmouth evened doubles with a 6-4 win over Haviv/Matthysen, but Hoeijmans/Lubbe earned their second doubles victory of the day (7-5) to seal a tightly contested point.”
“Once again, Dartmouth and Cal Poly traded wins, as Raz Haviv (6-4, 6-1) and Kamyshev (7-6, 6-4), improving to 4-5 and 7-2 records, respectively, knotted singles at two apiece to set up a dramatic finish between the ones.”
“Luc Hoeijmans, heading the singles lineup for just the second time this season, picked up his third overall victory of the day, outlasting Dartmouth’s Henry Ren (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) in three sets to earn a crucial 4-2 team win.”
