The Cal Poly men’s soccer program announced on Apr. 7 the addition of two new attacking players, Devin Bening and Sean Chamberlin, ahead of the upcoming season.
The move is expected to strengthen Cal Poly’s offense by bringing in players with proven records at both college and club levels. Bening transfers from Occidental College after earning Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Chamberlin joins following a standout club and high school career.
Bening scored 11 goals in 19 matches last fall for Occidental College, leading the conference in goals. He also ranked second among SCIAC players with 54 shot attempts and 25 points, contributing to Occidental’s regular season and tournament championships as well as an NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. Head coach Oige Kennedy said, “Devin is a perfect fit for our high-pressing, high-octane style of play. He proved to be a constant threat in front of goal during the last two seasons at Occidental.” Kennedy added that Bening “brings a relentless approach to pressing, setting the tone with his work rate and intensity,” highlighting his composure and ability to create chances.
Chamberlin will arrive at Cal Poly after scoring 32 goals and providing 10 assists during the Elite Club National League term with Marin FC. At Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo, he was named Marin County League Player of the Year after helping secure league titles and a CIF Northern California tournament crown. Kennedy said about Chamberlin: “We’re excited to add Sean to our fall class. He’s a top attacking talent who brings goals and high energy to our program.” Kennedy further stated that Chamberlin has established himself as one of Northern California’s top-performing forwards through his consistent performances.
Both additions are seen as key moves for Cal Poly as they prepare for preseason training camp this August. The coaching staff expressed anticipation about integrating both athletes into their system.
