A longstanding school record was broken by the Cal Poly men’s 4×400-meter relay team at the Franson Last Chance Invite, held at Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azusa, California. The team of Vincent Atilano, Chase Walter, Alexander Franco, and MacGregor TeSelle finished with a time of 3:06.72, surpassing the previous record of 3:07.1 set in 1979.
This new mark is currently the fastest in the Big West Conference this season and ranks as the 15th best in the Division I West Region for spring. The result puts Cal Poly’s relay squad in a strong position to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries. The Mustangs have come close to breaking this record over the past two seasons, posting several of their fastest times during that period.
In addition to the relay achievement, Cal Poly distance runners had notable performances in the men’s 1,500-meter event. Chris Caudillo won his section with a personal best of 3:37.94—the third-fastest time in school history—which also places him No. 14 in the West Region and No. 27 nationally for Division I this season. Carson Smith finished second with a lifetime best of 3:38.76 (No. 24 regionally and No. 43 nationally), while Spencer Pickren moved up to sixth all-time at Cal Poly with a time of 3:41.16.
Freshman Ibzan Felix and sophomore Mateo Malko-Allen also recorded personal records in their sections of the men’s 1,500-meter race.
On the women’s side, Melisse Djomby Enyawe and Sydney Sundgren both posted personal bests in the 1,500 meters with times of 4:27.41 and 4:30.82 respectively.
The meet also saw Aidan McCarthy run an outdoor lifetime best of 1:45.53 in the men’s 800 meters—his first outdoor race at that distance since last year’s USATF Outdoor Championships—making it the fastest time this season in the West Region and fourth-best nationally for NCAA Division I in 2025. “Running his first outdoor 800 since the 2023 USATF Outdoor Championships, McCarthy put the rest of the country on notice, running an outdoor lifetime best of 1:45.53, the fastest time in the West Region this season and No.4 in NCAA in 2025,” according to Cal Poly officials.
McCarthy broke his own school record by .73 seconds and came within .34 seconds of his all-conditions personal best from indoor competition—the fastest ever by an American collegiate athlete indoors.
Junior Lewis Westwood ran a personal best of over two-and-a-half seconds (1:47.97) to secure fourth place on Cal Poly’s all-time list for that event.
Overall, ten out of eleven Mustang distance runners achieved lifetime bests during this meet.
Cal Poly will next compete at Long Beach State’s Jack Rose Track for The Big West Championship meet on Friday and Saturday as they look to defend their titles after sweeping both men’s and women’s championships last year.
