Cal Poly’s men’s golf team finished in second place at the Big West Championship, its highest result in a decade and the best under sixth-year head coach Phil Rowe, according to a May 5 announcement.
The runner-up finish marks a significant achievement for the program, which last reached this position in 2016. The Mustangs’ one-under 863 team score was also their third lowest of the season.
Freshmen Rafael Bobo-Lloret and Zihao Wang led Cal Poly individually, both tying for tenth place with three-round totals of two-under-par 214. Bobo-Lloret closed with a two-under 70 that included four birdies, while Wang produced six birdies on Tuesday to post a three-under 69 and move up ten spots on the leaderboard for his first top-10 collegiate finish. Junior Jack Jarvis placed fifteenth with an even-par total of 216 over three rounds.
Graduate student Kyle Dougherty finished twenty-third after recording four birdies in his final round for a total score of four-over-par 220. Sophomore Nolan Kuszyk ended twenty-ninth at six-over-par 222.
Long Beach State, ranked twenty-eighth nationally, won its fourth consecutive Big West Championship title by finishing forty-eight under par as a team—setting a new tournament record.
