The Cal Poly men’s basketball team achieved its highest regulation scoring performance in 26 years with a 108-76 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday. Sophomore Hamad Mousa led the team with 23 points, followed by sophomores Guzman Vasilic and Cayden Ward, who each contributed 16 points.
Cal Poly finished the first half with a decisive 21-2 run, entering halftime ahead 62-41. The Mustangs made 13 three-pointers and extended their lead to as much as 42 points during the second half. Mousa connected on three long-range shots within the opening minutes of the second half, helping Cal Poly reach a quick 74-42 advantage.
Other contributors included Troy Plumtree with 11 points and Jackson Mosley, Peter Bandelj, and Austin Goode each adding 10 points. Bandelj also recorded eight assists, one short of his career high. Ward collected a team-high nine rebounds.
This marks Cal Poly’s highest single-game point total since defeating Cal State Fullerton at home in February 2000 with a score of 108-79.
Looking ahead, Cal Poly is seeded No. 8 for the Big West Championship taking place March 11-14 and will face No. 5 seed UC San Diego in an opening-round game on Wednesday, March 11 at 6 p.m., which will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Mousa continues to lead the Big West in scoring at an average of 20.4 points per game this season, bringing his season total to 631—27 shy of Stuart Thomas’s program record set during the 1990-91 season. Mousa also ranks second in single-season free throws made (175), fourth in three-pointers (84), eighth in free throw percentage (87.5%), and eleventh in field goals (186) for the program.
Cal Poly currently holds the position as the conference’s second-highest scoring team at an average of 82.5 points per game—the second-best mark in program history—and has surpassed the century mark four times among its fourteen wins this season. The team’s ten conference victories are its most since closing out the regular season with twelve wins during the 2012-13 campaign.
