Cal Poly lost a close game to UC San Diego on April 19, as the Tritons secured a 16-15 victory with a walk-off two-run single by Gabe Camacho in the ninth inning at Triton Ballpark. The Mustangs had led multiple times during the game but were unable to hold off UC San Diego’s final rally.
The outcome creates a three-way tie for first place in the Big West Conference standings among Cal Poly, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Barbara. Each team now has a conference record of 12-6, with four weekend series remaining. Cal State Fullerton trails by one game after losing two of three games at Oregon State.
Alejandro Garza and Nate Castellon led Cal Poly’s offense with four hits each, while Cam Hoiland and Casey Murray Jr. added three hits apiece. Ryan Tayman hit his twelfth home run of the season and drove in four runs for the Mustangs. Despite outhitting their opponents 24-16 and holding leads throughout the contest, Cal Poly was unable to secure the win.
UC San Diego ended its four-game Big West losing streak with this win and now leads Cal Poly 10-9 in their all-time series history. However, Cal Poly won this weekend’s series overall after victories on Friday (11-3) and Saturday (5-3).
The Mustangs will next play Pepperdine on Tuesday before returning home for another conference matchup against CSUN next weekend at Baggett Stadium.
