Cal Poly’s beach volleyball team split its matches at Stanford on April 17, sweeping San Jose State before narrowly losing to Stanford.
The results highlight the Mustangs’ strong season performance as they continue to compete against top-ranked teams. Cal Poly, ranked No. 6, improved its record to 24-8 after defeating San Jose State and then faced a close contest with No. 2 Stanford.
Against San Jose State, the Mustangs won all five matches in straight sets. Ella Connor and Erin Inskeep secured victory at the No. 1 spot, Logan Walter and Izzy Martinez won at No. 2, Peyton Dueck and Quinn Perry took No. 3, Julia Westby and Elise Lenahan prevailed at No. 4, while Hannah Byers and Maddy Byrne finished strong at No. 5. The sweep marked Cal Poly’s twentieth win by a score of 5-0 this season.
In their match against Stanford, Cal Poly battled closely for the third time this year with the Cardinal taking an early lead after winning at the No. 2 spot. Westby and Lenahan responded with a three-set win for Cal Poly at the fourth position before Connor and Inskeep delivered an impressive straight set victory to put Cal Poly ahead 2-1 overall.
Stanford evened up the score by winning at the fifth spot, setting up a decisive final match between Perry/Adams of Cal Poly and their Stanford counterparts in the third slot. After dropping their first set, Perry and Adams forced a deciding third but ultimately fell short as Stanford clinched it with a score of 15-10.
Cal Poly is scheduled to conclude its regular season on Saturday with two more matches hosted by Stanford: facing Pepperdine in the morning followed by a matchup against seventh-ranked California.
