Cal Poly defeated Cal State Fullerton 7-6 in a Big West baseball game on May 10, evening the conference series at one game each. The match took place at Goodwin Field.
The result keeps Cal Poly tied with UC Santa Barbara atop the Big West standings, both holding an 18-8 record. Cal Poly’s overall season record is now 28-21.
Jake Downing led the Mustangs offensively, driving in four runs with a home run and a single. Carson Turnquist earned his sixth win of the season, while Nick Bonn secured his twelfth save after pitching three innings and striking out five batters. “Bonn was lights out in the final two frames of his three-inning stint on the mound, recording a flyout and two strikeouts in the eighth and two more strikeouts and a groundout in the ninth. Bonn retired nine of the final 10 Titan batters of the game, giving up only an intentional walk with two outs in the ninth. The senior righty struck out five,” according to team reports.
Cal Poly outhit Cal State Fullerton twelve to four. Dylan Kordic contributed an RBI double and made a key defensive play with a diving catch that ended an early Titans scoring threat. Downing also executed an important defensive stop during a hit-and-run play by reversing direction for an assist at first base.
Paul Contreras stood out for Cal State Fullerton by knocking in four runs, including a three-run home run during their seventh-inning rally that narrowed Cal Poly’s lead to one run.
Looking ahead, Sunday’s deciding game will feature junior southpaw Josh Volmerding starting for Cal Poly against sophomore right-hander Dylan Smith for Cal State Fullerton.
