Two Cal Poly track and field athletes, Rory Devaney and Chris Caudillo, are set to compete at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships, which begin Thursday at Hayward Field, University of Oregon in Eugene. The four-day event will determine who represents the United States at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, scheduled for September 13-21. Typically, the top three finishers in each event who have met the qualifying standard will earn a spot on the U.S. team.
Devaney is entered in the men’s hammer throw final, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday. He previously achieved his best career performance at Hayward Field during the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, where he recorded a personal best of 243 feet, 4 inches (74.16 meters) to place fifth overall and earn First Team All-American honors. Devaney holds school records in hammer throw, discus, and weight throw and was the highest NCAA finisher in a men’s field event for Cal Poly since 2007.
“Hayward Field is a familiar place for Devaney, who had the best performance of his career at the facility just over a month ago to wrap up his junior season as a Mustang,” according to Cal Poly officials.
His mark from the NCAA meet ranks as the 13th best by an American this season; there are 16 competitors entered in his event at these championships. In 2023, after his freshman year, Devaney earned medals at the USATF U20 Championships with second place in hammer throw and third in discus.
Chris Caudillo will run in the first round of the men’s 1,500-meter at 6:10 p.m. Thursday. Caudillo recently ran a lifetime best of 3:35.65 at Stumptown Twilight on July 19—making it the second fastest time in school history and just .3 seconds behind Davis Bove’s school record from last year. His time ranks as the 30th fastest by an American this season among a field of 35 entrants. Caudillo will race in heat two; advancement to Saturday’s final depends on placing among top three per heat or posting one of next three fastest times.
During this past spring season as a sophomore, Caudillo qualified for NCAA West Preliminaries in the 1,500 for a second consecutive year and scored significant points for Cal Poly during their Big West Championship win.
In addition to Devaney and Caudillo’s participation stateside, current Mustang Cadence Roy-Williams is competing Thursday at Canada’s national championships in Ottawa with her long jump mark ranking fourth all-time for Cal Poly women.
Four former Mustangs are also participating at USATF Outdoors: Jake Ritter (men’s 10,000), Bobby Poynter (men’s 800), Sara Van Dyke (women’s steeplechase), and Katie Izzo (women’s 10,000 and women’s 5,000).
